PAPALOTE VERDE MONTERREY CHILDREN’S MUSEUM
Nuevo León, Mexico

The most recent project of the Papalote Children’s Museum, the Papalote Verde Monterrey Children’s Museum in Fundidora Park, with a surface area of over 9038 m², occupies a building that is partially below ground, which seeks to escape the rigidity of a traditional museum through fluid geometry and a multiplicity of spaces. Architecture and museography work together to offer visitors the opportunity to create their own tour of the museum, without interfering in their learning process.

A fundamental part of the message the museum wishes to transmit to its visitors—and the reason for its name, Papalote Verde, or “green butterfly”—is the need for human beings to take responsibility for their actions and be aware of how they affect the environment. The space is divided into five thematic areas, with eighty interactive exhibitions. The building itself reflects the project’s environmental focus: the use of environmentally friendly materials, a commitment to reducing the carbon footprint, and efficient energy use before, during, and after construction garnered it the LEED Platinum certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which is only awarded to sustainable constructions that reduce their use of resources while also promoting the use of renewable energy. This is the first building in Mexico to be awarded this certification.

The first building in Mexico with LEED Platinum certification will be a museum that promotes environmentally responsible practices both in its concept and in its structure.
